Uncovered art from prolific artist.

Once an active and popular web cartoonist, Shmorky abruptly disappeared 2017. Rumored to have ended his own life, what remains of his work today is only art he has shared online – until now.

In collaboration with a long-time commissioner of Shmorky, a hidden trove of his art has become public for the first time.

Own a piece of internet lore

The story of Shmorky: The Lost Collection is also a story of Shmorky himself.

In 2001, Shmorky was commissioned by Dr. J, the mother of his roommate at the time, who was providing the much-needed payments for their rent.

Dr. J, a business consultant, author, and designer of games, hired Shmorky to illustrate art for her books, games, and PowerPoint presentations. PDFs of these related works will be included in the purchase of the associated NFTs.

These pieces represent the precious few examples Shmorky was able to produce of commercially viable work during his career.

Who is Shmorky?

Shmorky was an independent web cartoonist and animator who began sharing their work around the year 2000. They are most often recognized for their work  with SomethingAwful.com, contributing the FlashTub animations as well as viral videos like “How is babby formed?”.

Shmorky departed from public life and ceased creating art in 2017, following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a fan. He had reportedly been hospitalized following a suicide attempt and is believed to be deceased.

Where does Shmorky: The Lost Collection come from?

Shmorky: The Lost Collection is a series of artworks commissioned from the artist beginning around the year 2001.

In his own autobiographical comic, Shmorky details living with his second roommate during this time. His roommate’s mother, Dr. J., commissioned the artworks featured in this collection as payment for Shmorky’s  share of the rent.

Some of these works saw use as visual components for Dr J’s consulting work and games. Outside of this limited use, this collection has sat, preserved and unseen, for nearly two decades.

In late 2021, Dr. J approached the team at Scatter.art to offer these works as a collection of NFTs. As such, we are proud to present to you, Shmorky: The Lost Collection as one of the few remaining examples of this dearly departed artist’s works.

In the case of Shmorky: The Lost Collection, NFTs provide a form of digital provenance for individual pieces of art. In addition to being the recorded owner of a given piece of Shmorky artwork, the original commissioner has agreed to offer the copyrights of the corresponding pieces of artworks to their cryptographic owners.

In this way, purchasers of Shmorky: The Lost Collection, can enjoy creative and commercial freedom over the works they have collected.

Why buy a Shmorky NFT?

Many of the reasons people have for buying traditional art also apply to the purchase of NFTs. For instance, people may buy physical art or NFTs to:

  • Collect something from an artist they enjoy
  • To show off
  • To appreciate its artistic merit
  • To speculate on its value

As a digital asset, NFTs  also have the added benefits of:

  • ease of storage and exchange
  • integration into your preferred metaverse
  • public display in your Ethereum wallet

Unique to a Shmorky NFT, of course, is its connection to a renowned artist. In a sea of silly animal NFTs, there is only one Shmorky.
